New Song: Jesus, I Am Resting
Scripture tells us to ‘sing to the LORD a new song (Ps 96:1).’ And we love to sing new songs at Cornerstone Church, but from time to time, a new song to our congregation was originally a new song to a congregation a century or so ago. While studying 1 John, we will grow in correct doctrine, knowing joy, living holy lives and be assured of our salvation – and that comes from recognising and resting in who Jesus is and what He has done on our behalf. As we rest, we can be assured of what is true:
Jesus, I am resting, resting, in the joy of what
Thou art I am finding out the greatness of Thy loving heart (Ps 116:7)
Each verse communicates the heart and character of God, and it’s comforting reality in the life of a Christ follower:
Jesus, I am resting, resting, in the joy of what Thou art;
I am finding out the greatness, of Thy loving heart.
Thou hast bid me gaze upon Thee, and Thy beauty fills my soul,
For by Thy transforming power, Thou hast made me whole.
O, how great Thy loving kindness, vaster, broader than the sea!
O, how marvelous Thy goodness, lavished all on me!
Yes, I rest in Thee, Beloved, know what wealth of grace is Thine,
Know Thy certainty of promise, and have made it mine.
Simply trusting Thee, Lord Jesus, I behold Thee as Thou art,
And Thy love, so pure, so changeless, satisfies my heart;
Satisfies its deepest longings, meets, supplies its every need,
Compasseth me round with blessings: Thine is love indeed!
Ever lift Thy face upon me, as I work and wait for Thee;
Resting ’neath Thy smile, Lord Jesus, earth’s dark shadows flee.
Brightness of my Father’s glory, sunshine of my Father’s face,
Keep me ever trusting, resting, fill me with Thy grace.
(Ps 116:7, Ps 27:8, 1 Jn 3:1, Ps 62:7, Ps 107:9, James 1:7, Ps 73:26, Ps 27:4)
I hope we will sing this song overflowing with the joy and holiness that comes from being near Christ, grow in our understanding of correct doctrine and be assured our salvation which is found only in and through Christ.
