New Song: Jesus!

Charles Spurgeon said ‘The most important daily habit we can possess is to remind ourselves of the Gospel.’

I love songs that help us to see, remember, and respond to the whole scope of the Gospel – creation, fall, redemption, restoration, glorification all told in three minutes! The song ‘Jesus!’ by Citizens and Saints is just that type of song…

In the first two verses we see our Savior’s true identity – but His identity wrapped in humanity in full obedience to His Father’s will as an act of rescue for our fallen and broken world (Philippians 2:10, Hebrews 12:2).

The King of all creation set aside His crown

A servant to the Father’s love

          Descended from His throne above

Author of Salvation, Giver of new life

          Crucified to pay for sin

Our righteousness is in the name of…

The chorus is again a reminder of Christ’s identity but the glorified reality of what is true both now, and what will be true when He comes again in glory – ‘every heart and tongue confess Your name above all names… Forever You will reign’ (Romans 14:11, Philippians 2).

Jesus! Every heart and tongue confess

          Your name above all names

All things of this earth belong to You

          Forever You will reign

In the third verse we see the redemption won for us and the beginnings of restoration Jesus as the God of resurrection and conqueror of death has accomplished on our behalf (John 11:25).

God of resurrection, conqueror of death

          Ruler over everything

The Lord of Lords and King of Kings is…

And finally on the bridge we glimpse the glorification – the name that God has bestowed upon Jesus, and all of heaven and earth for all eternity worshiping in response to the wonder of Christ’s completed work on the cross (Philippians 2:9).

Highly exalted is the name of Jesus Christ

Heaven and earth declare all praise to Jesus Christ

Highly exalted is the name of Jesus Christ

Heaven and earth declare all praise to Jesus!

I hope that this song will help us remember and rehearse the wonder, mystery and glory of the Gospel together as a redeemed people.
