New Song: Grace Alone
There are so many good worship songs available these days… but there are fewer great worship songs available. And every once in a while a great song appears that perfectly articulates the weight of the Gospel – who Jesus is, what He has done, and who we are. Those are the type of songs we want to sing, pray and live at Cornerstone Church.
Left to our own devices, we never choose God – He initiates relationship, we merely respond. Because it was before the foundations of the world that He set His affections upon us, it was while we were dead, while we were enemies that Christ died for us [Jn 15:16, 1 Jn 4:19, Deut 7:7, Col 2:13, Rom 5:10, Jn 14:8, Heb 4:14,16, Rom 8:29, Eph 2:6].
I was an orphan lost at the fall; running away when I'd hear You call
But Father, You worked Your will
I had no righteousness of my own, I had no right to draw near Your throne
But Father, You loved me still
And in loved before You laid the world's foundation,
You predestined to adopt me as Your own
You have raised me up so high above my station
I am a child of God by grace and grace alone
It is only in and through the perfect obedience, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ that this right relationship with God the Father was accomplished. Now as people who are hidden with Christ in God, His perfect righteousness is ours! Everything that is true of Jesus Christ is now true of us [Rom 3:22-26, Col 3:3, 2 Cor 5:21, Phil 2:8, Is 64:6, Rom 6:5].
You left Your hope to seek out the lost, You knew the great and terrible cost
But Jesus, Your face was set
I worked my fingers down to the bone, but nothing I did could ever atone
Jesus, You paid my debt
By Your blood I have redemption and salvation
Lord, You died that I might reap what You have sown
And You rose that I might be a new creation
I am born again by grace, and grace alone
The Holy Spirit applies this completed work of Christ that enables us to be made right before God. It is only by the illuminating work of the Holy Spirit that dead people are made alive in Christ [Eph 1:3, Jn 16:13, 2 Cor 4:6, Ez 36:26, Phil 3:20].
I was in darkness all of my life, I never knew the day from the night
But Spirit, You made me see
I swore I knew the way on my own, head full of rocks a heart made of stone
But Spirit, You moved in me
And at Your touch my sleeping spirit was awakened
On my darkened heart the light of Christ has shone
Called into a kingdom that cannot be shaken
Heaven's citizen by grace and grace alone
The same grace that saves us is the same grace that keeps us, sustains us, and enables us to stand, live and believe in who Jesus is, what He has done, and who we are [Eph 2:8, Jn 1:16].
So I'll stand in faith by grace and grace alone
I will run the race by grace, and grace alone
I will slay my sin by grace and grace alone
I will reach the end by grace and grace alone
